Safety and Security:
The University has designed this program to be not only interesting and exciting but also to be attuned to security issues. We are not planning to travel to hazardous areas or along dangerous roads. We will benefit on a daily basis from the deep local expertise and connections of the Rector, Vice Rector, and staff at the Tantur Ecumenical Institute to make sure we reasonably mitigate risks and dangers.
If security issues during this program are of concern to you as you consider enrolling, I would like to offer the following resources for you to draw upon:
Before I made my first trip to Israel and the West Bank in 2006 I found that the following travel discussion forums provided excellent, first-hand, up-to-the-minute information about security issues, not to mention invaluable advice on how to get a good cup of coffee, packing, best times to visit museums, etc.
The U.S. Department of State has issued a travel warning and a consular information sheet for Israel, the West Bank and Gaza (we won’t be going anywhere near Gaza during this program). They also have a site with useful tips for traveling abroad.
